by on February 21, 2012

The 1940 Census is almost here!  When it opens on April 2nd at 9:00 AM (Eastern), the place to be is the National Archives’ 1940 Census web site.  We are excited to announce that our home on the web will be:

 1940Census.archives.gov

We invite you to visit today to watch the video featuring National Archives’ archivist Connie Potter and bookmark the site.  Then come back to visit the full site when it launches on April 2, 2012 at 9:00 AM (Eastern)!

To help you get ready we will be sharing information in lectures and blogs and on our Facebook and Twitter feeds (hash tag #1940Census) every day between now and April 2.

Let us know here at NARAtions if you have any questions about the 1940 Census, and who you’re looking forward to finding in these newly opened records!

Happy searching!

I’m anxious to find my uncle ROY MARTIN! I remember him visiting us about 1941 with his wife and child, so he MUST be married in 1940! I’m hoping that with his wife, Lela and his son, Kenneth I will finally be able to find him. He was born in abt 1901 in Illinois, but I have had no luck finding him after 1910. (Also, I will be in this census, too, so that’s fun!)

After watching the informative video, I tried to find the “1940 Enumeration District Description for Silver Spring, Maryland. I had exit the 1940census.archives.gov site and to go to archives.gov. I was given the location of films with information. Did I miss a step or is the ED information not accessible via internet?

Hi Sally,

Try searching for “1940 census maps Montgomery County Maryland” in our Online Public Access (OPA) database. I pulled up several maps, and found Silver Spring. You can find more information on using OPA to search for the maps here.

I hope this helps you get started with your research!
