February 10 – Former POWs warm up around a stove
by Darren Cole on February 10, 2011

Former American and Australian prisoners of war warming up before a stove in the 24th Division medical clearing station after being returned to U.S. lines by Chinese Communists, February 10, 1951. (ARC ID 531398)
February 10 doesn’t seem to be the most uplifting day for records. A half-submerged USS Utah and some glum former POWs — but at least they’ve been released. Maybe you know of something better? Let us know below!

How very sad for these heroes. While not a “document” per se, but a Marriage Certificate attests to the marriage that same day to my recently deceased wife of almost 60 years! I was a Marine Corps Recruiting Sgt. in Nyack, NY enlisting and sending new Marines to Korea. In May 1952 as a Sgt. I left my new Bride to join those Marines in Korea as an Antitank Assault (ATA) Infantry Unit Leader with Weapons Co, 1stBn, 5th Marines (and three subsequent Marine units in Korea). While we cut our wedding cake with a Marine sword surrounded by fellow Marine Recruiters “saluting” us, these brave men were fortunate to be “huddled” around that pitiful “stove.” God Bless them and all who served our Nation.
