1947 – Commemoration of Lincoln’s Birthday

by Meredith Stewart on February 12, 2011

In the series, “Photographs Relating to the Administration, Family, and Personal Life of Harry S. Truman,” we’ve found online a photograph from February 12, 1947 at a commemoration of Lincoln’s Birthday with a large crowd of African American school children on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

If you do a search on our Online Public Access prototype for “Lincoln’s Birthday” (note: after the search results, click “View all Online Holdings”) you will see many more pictures of Vice President, and then later President Truman commemorating Lincoln’s Birthday.  Pictures are available from 1945, 1957, and 1948.  This one was particularly interesting to me because of the fashion.  Take a close look — there’s lots of great hats and coats.
