March 16 – Act to Authorize Purchase of Land at West Point

A valuable strategic location since the Revolutionary War, West Point, New York, would go on to become the home of the United States Military Academy, founded on March 16, 1802. This act authorizes the purchase of land at “Westpoint” for “such Fortifications and Garrisons as may be necessary for the defense of the same.”
