May 11 – USS Bunker Hill after a Kamikaze Attack

Taken on May 11, 1945, this photo shows the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill burning after being hit by two Japanese kamikaze attacks during the Battle of Okinawa.

May 01 – Coded Order to Engage the Spanish Fleet

This telegram, in code from Assistant Secretary of the the Navy Theodore Roosevelt to Commodore George Dewey, Commander of the U.S. Asiatic Squadron, was sent without the knowledge of Secretary of the Navy Long. The telegram authorized Dewey to engage the Spanish fleet. On May 1, 1898, Dewey would destroy the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Manila Bay.
